Two weeks in Newfoundland
Discover the island's hidden treasures
If you're looking for a little-known destination, Newfoundland is a gem not to be underestimated. Although often overshadowed by Quebec, Newfoundland is actually only slightly smaller than California and larger than the United Kingdom. To truly enjoy the island from one end to the other, plan on at least 10 days, but two weeks will allow you to savor every moment. The two coasts offer such different experiences that it would be a shame not to explore them both.
Before leaving, there are a few prejudices to debunk. First of all, prepare to meet some incredibly friendly locals. Rarely have we been welcomed with such warmth during our travels. Also, don't underestimate the local culinary scene. Although sometimes you have to search a little, we were blown away by the quality of the culinary creations offered to us.
Here is a four-step itinerary to explore Newfoundland:
Gros Morne region (west coast): After arriving at Deer Lake Airport, which offers daily flights from Montreal, take the road to the Gros Morne region early in the morning. This beautiful and little-known region is home to Western Brook Pond, an ancient fjord cut off from the sea, with its impressive cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. A few kilometers to the south, the Tablelands will dazzle you with their desert landscape similar to that of Mars. Don't miss the breathtaking coastal paths along the sea. For your stay, the Sugar Hill Inn is a good choice, but we also discovered the Black Spruce Inn, nestled in the village of Norris Point, with its restaurant which was the best in the region.
Twillingate (east coast): Continue your journey east with a 4-hour drive to the charming fishing village of Twillingate. This little slice of paradise offers beautiful hills and stunning sea views. As expected, it's a great place for hikers, with plenty of trails to explore. Catering is rather limited, so renting a chalet with a kitchen is recommended. We loved our stay at the charming Robin's Nest, a tastefully renovated former bakery and its own pebble beach. Our dinner by the fire on the beach remains one of our best memories.
Trinity and Bonavista (east coast): Make a third stop towards the picturesque village of Trinity and the Bonavista region. Trinity appears frozen in time, offering a painstakingly preserved glimpse into the last century. Stroll its charming streets and don't miss the beautiful Skerwink Trail nearby. Just a half-hour drive away, the village of Bonavista is also worth a visit. Walk the Klondike Trail with its original rock formations. The BorΓ©al Diner restaurant impressed us with its delicious small dishes to share. Although we went out of season, we recommend taking a detour to see the puffins in Elliston. For accommodation, Twine's Loft and Fisher's Loft are favorites. We preferred the latter, but you shouldn't miss having a drink on the terrace of Twine's Loft for a pleasant time. Also stop at Two Whales Coffee for a great coffee or lunch.
St. John's (East Coast): Finish your Newfoundland adventure with a trip to the capital, St. John's. This beautiful destination is known for its picturesque hills, colorful houses and numerous coastal paths. The origin of the pastel-colored houses, known as Jellybean Row, is said to have come from the fact that sailors could recognize their homes from afar when returning from fishing. St. John's is an authentic city where you don't feel like you're in a place built just for tourists. Explore the city for a few days and discover the amazing culinary scene. We recommend the Alt Hotel and Terra Restaurant, run by a former Joe Beef chef. Mallard's Cottage and the Adelaide Oyster Bar are also pleasant options. If possible, sample the delights of chef Jeremy Charles at the Merchant Tavern restaurant. Please note that some restaurants may be closed due to the pandemic.
It is important to emphasize that this route does not cover the south and north of the province, nor the Viking remains, as the distances would have been too long. It will be for next time.
Prepare to be amazed by Newfoundland's natural beauty, friendly people and delicious cuisine. This two-week trip will leave you with unforgettable memories and will make you want to come back and explore more of this fascinating island.
